In regards to our information that we have gathered about Jean Talon, there are many ways of
how he increased the self-sufficiency of the New France Colony.
Talon had plans for producing a surplus of export with the colony, but self-sufficiency was
needed in order to accomplish his goal with the colony. Officers of the Caignan-Salieres regiment, invited by Talon to be
established into the colony, were placed to live next to the existing colonists. These officers were taught to be self-sufficient
by their neighbours, and the settlers, in turn, had full protection: over themselves, and their home by the officers. Due
to this, settlers were assured if and officer of the regiment lived beside their home.
Self-sufficiency among the colonists was taught and learned. They soon were able to tend to
the land, grow agriculture and food, and build houses. Basically, the colony was starting to maintain its order, and the settlers
and officers eventually were able to take care of themselves-so by that point, Talon’s plan was preceding accordingly.
Further, Talon revoked rights of title-holders who had neglected the responsibility to increase
the population, and he also redistributed those people that were keen about developing them properly.
As for the organizational system, it was aimed at filling the large open stretches of land on
the both sides of the St. Lawrence River-with colonists. Talon’s plan and goal was to enable the settlers to form tighter
communities. He thought this would benefit them in terms of helping one another, creating industries and trade, as well as
defending themselves against attacks from the Iroquois. So, Talon believed and thought the best of the colony that he was
managing and trying to bring at a certain peak in power and wealth.
Our opinion about increasing the self-sufficiency of the colony, based on the topic of families,
and based on our research is:
For many families to have a communicating marriage, with children, so that the families could
be cooperative and reliable, working together even more to present the colony as a whole.
To have the different types of families depend on each other-to trust each other, and to have
productive work throughout the colony. This will enable communication throughout the colony, and better work for the inhabitants.
If the colony again would be able to work as whole, families alike, New France would function better and be more fertile.
For the families to actually learn how self-sufficiency works and what it is as well. This will
promote more of a self-awareness in the colony, and also, the families will realize more clearly how the colony system is
beginning to work and develop.
In conclusion, the self-sufficiency of the colony and the families is one of the basic characteristics
which have built a good foundation for the colony and productivity. Had it not been for self-sufficiency, and the other foundations
to build up and construct a functioning colony, our country, Canada would not have been where it is today; New France was
part of what is now present-day Canada.
